WELCOME TO CASTLE CRAWL CYMRU!
I’m Welsh, born and bred, and yet a lot of my own history I never knew.
Having always lived amongst the Marches of Powys there’s never been a day that I haven’t been a stone’s throw away from an ancient castle, abbey or standing stone.
Even my school bus would pass castle ruins to and from home, but I never learned the significance of these historical monuments until I left school.
I hope that this little site helps you to explore the wonder that is Wales!
LATEST CASTLES ADDED
Caer Drewyn (locally known as Mynydd y Gaer) is thought to be around 2500 years old, being constructed in the Iron Age.
Dolforwyn Castle was constructed in 1273 by Llewelyn ap Gruffudd.
Cardigan Castle was constructed by Norman invaders at the end of the 11th century.
Rhuddlan Castle was the first of the revolutionary concentric, or ‘walls within walls’, castles.
This is another of the ‘Three Castles’, it was built by Normans who named it ‘Gros Mont’, meaning ‘Big Hill’.
This castle was built in 1093 by Roger of Montgomery and it is one of the few castles that was never captured by the Welsh.
The last castle to be built by a Welsh prince, Caergwrle Castle was built in 1278 - 82.
Some evidence suggests that the castle was possibly constructed over an earlier Roman Fort.
Entering the castle from the carpark you walk up some steps that lead into the castle ground.

Located in Marches territory, this castle was originally built in the late 12th Century.
In the 12th century the original wooden keep was rebuilt in stone and mortar and it never again fell to the Welsh.
